It’s that time of year again when we think about love and those we care about. While candies and romantic dinners occupy our thoughts on February 14th, the rest of the month is an excellent opportunity to express our love for ourselves and our families through our food choices (buying frozen baby octopus in Malaysia to be cooked for the ‘special’ dinner). With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of reasons why you should love seafood and eat more of it!
- Seafood is high in nutrients
Omega-3s, iron, B and D vitamins, and protein are all important nutrients for overall health and wellness at all ages. Nutrients, vitamins, and omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and shellfish are needed for strong bones, cognitive development, and a healthy heart and immune system. Consumption of seafood at least twice a week lowers the risk of death from any cause by 17 percent. Omega-3 EPA and DHA lipids, which are present naturally in seafood, are necessary for our health.
- It can be prepared in a variety of ways
You may only associate tuna with your mother’s tuna noodle casserole and canned salmon with salmon cakes, but did you know these pantry staples can be used in over a hundred different ways? Check out our recipe page for creative ways to use tuna and salmon, from chilli to omelettes to paninis and enchiladas!
- Families come together over seafood
Researchers and medical experts support and promote the benefits of family meals for a lifetime. When you include seafood in your family’s meals, everyone benefits from the added nourishment. Not only that, but it’s quite simple to construct, and with so many species to choose from, there’s something for everyone. Home-cooked meals have been shown in numerous studies to nurture the spirit, brain, and health of all family members as well as help to absorb information effectively. Bringing seafood to the table brings the entire family together.
- It’s a fantastic chicken or beef replacement
Tuna has a subtle flavour and is lower in saturated fat and cholesterol than most forms of poultry and beef, making it an ideal, healthy option in your favourite dishes.
- Seafood is easy and quick to be prepared
Many fish meals may be prepared in under 15 minutes. Don’t know how to cook seafood? There is no need to be concerned. The best technique to detect if a fish is done is to use a fork to test it. Insert the fork at an angle into the thickest part of the meat and gently twist. When the fish is done, it will flake easily and lose its translucent or raw aspect. You can also cook the fish until it reaches an internal temperature of 140° to 145°F.
- With amusing recipes, even your kids will enjoy it
Building healthy habits and encouraging children to love nutritious foods at a young age is critical, but persuading children to try new foods can be difficult. Make tasting new dishes enjoyable for them by involving them in the planning and preparation.
